Fourth Annual Los Angeles Gala Brings Smiles to Thousands of Children Around the World

Nearly 400 Operation Smile supporters, including celebrities, businesspeople and politicians, came together for the fourth annual Operation Smile Los Angeles Gala to help children around the world who are suffering with facial deformities.

The gala, held October 1, at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles, Calif., honored humanitarian and children’s healthcare advocate Cindy McCain, TV sportscaster and former NBA star John Salley, retired General and Mrs. William Lyon and Operation Smile volunteer Dr. Mok Theavy.

“Access Hollywood” host, Billy Bush, emceed the evening. Bush, along with help from actors Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, raffled off a piece of jewelry from Zalemark’s Demeter line. Following dinner and a performance by the Children of the World Choir and the Laker Girls, several outstanding individuals were honored for their support of Operation Smile and their commitment to helping children in need.

Arizona Senator John McCain made a special appearance to present the Wallis Annenberg Public Service Award to his wife, Cindy. A long time supporter of children’s healthcare issues, Mrs. McCain has been actively involved with Operation Smile since 2001, taking part in medical missions to Morocco, Vietnam and India.

John Salley was presented with The Wilt Chamberlain Award by Barbara Lewis, sister of the late basketball great. Salley played 12 seasons in the NBA and was a member of four championship-winning teams. This past June, Salley co-hosted the Michigan Friends of Operation Smile’s Safari of Smiles Gala.

Major General and Mrs. William Lyon accepted the Corporate Humanitarian Award from past Operation Smile honoree and spokesperson Roma Downey. Former Chief of the Air Force Reserve, William Lyon is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of William Lyon Homes, headquartered in Newport Beach, CA. In addition to serving on the board of Operation Smile’s Los Angeles Chapter, in tandem with his wife, Willa, Lyon is committed to a host of philanthropic causes.

This year’s Medical Visionary Award recipient, Dr. Mok Theavy, has been instrumental to Operation Smile and many other organizations, in bringing help to the people of Cambodia. With his tireless energy and gentle nature, Dr. Theavy is a role model to all who work alongside him.

Actress Roma Downey announced to the crowd that Donald Trump couldn’t attend the event, but he’d given her a $50,000 to benefit Operation Smile. Entertainment-industry billionaire Barry Diller, pledged $60,000 on the spot to the cause. “I have to out-Trump Trump,” Diller told Operation Smile Co-founder and CEO Dr. Bill Magee.

Thanks to the generosity of those who attended and sponsored the evening, Operation Smile will be able to provide surgeries to thousands of children who are hoping for the chance at a normal life.
