Program Training Workshop

And other opportunities for student volunteers to serve on an Operation Smile international surgical program.

Share Your Smile with the World

For the past four decades, Operation Smile has invited our most involved and invested student volunteers to serve on our international surgical programs.

There are currently two program opportunities: Program Training Workshop (PTW) for high schoolers and U-Voice Student Storyteller training for undergraduates.

  • High schoolers: Program Training Workshop, or PTW, prepares high schoolers to serve as health care educators for children waiting to receive surgery.
  • Undergraduates: The U-Voice Student Storyteller Program equips undergraduate students with the skills to serve as a journalist and cover the program.

In January and July each year, we hold a three-day workshop that trains these students and chaperones to be eligible for placement on a surgical program in the coming months.

Apply for PTW

The next Program Training Workshop will be hosted from July 18-21, 2025, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, U.S. The deadline to apply is June 6. Visit our iSmile student portal to learn more.

About Program Training Workshop

High schoolers serve as a health care educator during a program. They help our youngest patients learn the fundamentals of healthy practices, from handwashing to toothbrushing, nutrition to fire safety, and more.

Students must earn the privilege to support our patients and their families on site. Here’s the path we recommend if you’re interested in applying for PTW.

Step 1: Support Operation Smile

Students interested in a program opportunity must show a demonstrated commitment to Operation Smile. This includes joining or starting the Operation Smile club at your school and rallying your community through fundraisers, service projects, educational outreach and more. A student must be involved with Operation Smile for at least a year to be considered.

Step 2: Attend ISLC or LEA

To be considered for PTW, you must attend an Operation Smile student leadership conference at least once. This means you must attend either our International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC), which takes place every July, or our Latinoamerica en Accion conference (LEA), which takes place every January.

Step 3: Apply

Visit our iSmile student portal at isp.operationsmile.org to review and complete the application. We recommend that you make an account on iSmile. Applications for the July PTW are due June 6, and applications are for the January training are due Dec. 12.

Step 4: Attend PTW and Earn Placement

Attendance at PTW is mandatory, and participation in person is required. We’ll ask you for your availability to attend a program; to determine your program placement, we encourage you to be as flexible with your schedule as possible.

The people who are coming into the clinic and getting surgeries are not the same people that are leaving the clinic, and the volunteers, too. It’s such an impactful process.

Apply for U-Voice

The next training for our U-Voice Student Storyteller Program will take place from July 18-21, 2025, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, U.S. The deadline to apply is April 4. Visit our iSmile student portal to learn more.

U-Voice: Amplify Their Voices

Our patients and volunteers deserve to be heard, and our undergraduate student volunteers help to share their stories with the world.

In one of the most unique roles of a program, selected undergraduate student volunteers serve as journalists who capture the stories of our patients, their families and our volunteers. They conduct interviews, take pictures and package it all together into feature stories and social media posts.
